I prefer vi as well, but I'd take jens advice and use one from kde or gnome. When in X, I like gedit. In kde, I like Kate. There are others though. From the command line, joe is really easy to use and has a help screen available right there when you open it up. Say you want to open /etc/fstab. Just use the name of one of the above, and the file. Do it as root.
orCode:vi /etc/fstab
etc...Code:gedit /etc/fstab

I noticed the same(already a few times). Seems to be a problem with pgktool.

Try running alsaconf as root (su).
