try pkgtool from the same directory that the file is in

You have to install packages as root. You tried that as a user - won't work. Installpkg is not in a user's path, nor permission anyway. Just su to root, then you should fine.

Why making it so difficult?
Try this:
*Download this .tgz package:
http://www.linuxpackages.net/pkg_details.php?id=7608
*Type su and give your root password.
*installpkg k3b-0.12.4a-i486-1kjz.tgz
...and that's all...

you also have to make sure the permissions for you cd burner or dvd burner are correct. If they aren't, you can fix them after installing K3b by selecting "Setup K3b" from the "Settings" menu.
