fixed! turns out that i had forgotten to include modprobe snd-intel8x0, modprobe snd-pcm-oss, modprobe snd-mixer-oss and modprobe snd-seq-oss to my init scripts. oops.

so after telling you 3 times or more to check your driver modules you mean you actually did?
