    Slax is a fork off of, and based on Slackware. They are similar, but not really the same. Slackware is one of the oldest distros still alive.

    Slackware is also the first distro that made GNU/Linux easy to use.

    I use Slackware for the install, but recommend always keeping a copy of Slax on hand for anything from an emergency disk to a quick alternative to using another person's (windows) computer. Also, imho, it does a better job at being a "live" distro than Knoppix....at least from what I've experienced (especially if you must use ndiswrapper for wifi).
