I then used installpkg to install the cdparanoia tgz package.

Then I compiled and installed cdrdao from source since I couldn't find a tgz package.
Then I downloaded cdrtools and tried to compile it from source,
cdparanoia comes with slackware as a package already, cdrdao does too, congrats on screwing your system up with make install though and not making packages first.

always make packages first, never install directly from source

    Cool

As you are new, my suggestion would be to attempt to simply reinstall your kde packages overtop of themselves - it should recopy the proper files overtop and correct most issues, but if it's more complex you'll want to check your KDE logs and see exactly whats broken. If it's not there check /var/syslog and /var/Xorg.0.log for errors - or post them here for us to take a look at.

I reinstalled all of my KDE packages (I'm using KDE 3.5.1) and removed the extra cdparanoia package I installed earlier and k3b still won't work. After I first upgraded KDE, I removed the old KDE 3.4.2 packages and I didn't see any errors either time I installed KDE. When I tried to configure K3b, I got this message.
The specified library k3bsetup2 could not be found

    The diagnostics is:
libsamplerate.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

    Possible reasons:

*An error occurred during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control module
*You have old third party modules lying around.

Check these points carefully and try to remove the module mentioned in the error message. If this fails, consider contacting your distributor or packager.
My syslog and Xorg.0.log files are too long to post, so I compressed them as zip files and attached them to this post.

I just updated everything with slackpkg, and it seems to be working now. Thanks everyone for the help. I really appreciate it.

Was the K3B you were using a Slackware package? These packages are often compiled on machines that had an older version of K3B on them and therefore do not have the K3BSetup2 component compiled on them as the ./configure script located it on the machine already. Compiling from source is your best bet, however Slacky.it had a good K3b package at one time, with k3bsetup2 included in it. Haven't downloaded it in a while though.
