What VMware product are you using:
Player, Workstation, Server, or ESX Server?
At the bios boot screen, you can press <ESC> to access the boot menu. The choose cdrom.
If you could tell us a little more about the configuration, it might help a bit.
Thanks.

Which virtual scsi are you using, I had problems with the LSi logic, it only works with the raid.s kernel I swiched my VM config to use the bustek and scsi.s and she works great now.

Yep. Great recommendation.
You can choose to create a custom virtual machine and then try:
1) Buslogic (SCSI)
2) LSILogic (SCSI)
3) IDE (if all else fails)
* be sure to point the vm to the iso image that you wish to install.
all the best.
