    I did extracted System.map
    copied bzimage file

    it failed

Can I cd to existing kernel src in /usr/src/linux-2.4.31 and do make bzImage as config file will already be there and rest would be same steps?

    I surrender to kernel thing.

    Thanks for all your help.

Your instructions worked great. Now I have successfully restored 2.4.31 kernel

Don't know why method (zcat of system.map & copying bzimage from /kernel/bare.i to /boot) failed

Still want to know how to restore from src or other ways.

I guess installing kernel from tgz won't let us select the options which we have to do it manually by editing rc.modules file.

    Hi,

    1. What does kernel-headers package contains?

    2. I have 2 distros on 2 hard disk
hda distro has lilo installed on hda mbr

how to add hdb distro to lilo? Does hdb kernel image needs to be copied as well to hda boot partition?

How will lilo pick up hdb kernel image while booting it?
does lilo reads root= line and pick kernel from that disk?

    3. Does lilo needs to be install on root partition of hdb to make it boot from hda lilo?

I have read that to boot linux from third party boot loader, grub/lilo has to be installed on root / boot partition.

    4. how to move root partition and other partitions from hda to hdb?
What all changes have to be done?

Please take all these q's independent of each other.

    Thanks

    1) kernel-headers package contains lots of ".h" files for using for compiling applications, it is the 'interface' for your kernel so to speak. you want the 2.4 headers package, NOT the 2.6 headers package. You are supposed to run the same kernel headers that your GLIBC was compiled on, and that is 2.4, not 2.6

    2) no, it doesnt need to be copied to the hda boot partition, check your lilo.conf file in /etc, and you will see a block of text outlining your first kernel entry, copy and paste that to another block below, and change the 'root=/dev/hda1' to hdb or whatever, give it the correct kernel name from your other distro /boot dir (maybe /boot/vmlinuz), and then re-run lilo, and reboot to test it out.

    3) no, the LILO currently installed on the MBR will boot it fine.

    4) I dont get this, if you moved your root from hda to hdb, you'd overwrite your other distro.

    yes
I have attached the lilo.txt file. Please add necessary lines line for hdb distro ( root=/dev/hdb7) and will it pick kernel image from hdb boot partition?

can you please send sample lilo.conf file which boots hda distro from hda mbr and also boots hdb distro?

    Please

    Thanks.

How can we move linux partitons from hda to hdb or hdc ( In general) ?
What all file changes are needed ?
