During the installation you get the choice to select the kernel bundled with the distribution .

What is the problem with current installation?

if you want to upgrade your kernel without building ever,
just upgradepkg the kernel-modules-2.6*.tgz and kernel-generic-2.6*.tgz packages every time they come out on the slackware changelog, or from extra/ on your slackware cd 2.
do not upgrade your 2.4 kernel headers package to 2.6 kernel headers, it is supposed to be 2.4 even on a 2.6 kernel on modules.
