You are absolutely right and using fglrxconfig was a desperate attempt to get this working. I have replaced my xorg.conf file with the one from the first link that you provided and everything still works. Still no DRI though. flg_glxgears still does not run. The output is:

    bash-3.1$ fgl_glxgears
    Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 131 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 32
Current serial number in output stream: 32
    bash-3.1$

I am out of ideas here. I am still officially open to suggestions regardless of what they are. I can always restore the original files. Thanks in advance.

PS: Below is my new xorg.conf

    Code:
    bash-3.1$ cat xorg.conf
#le is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.

    # again, run the following commands as root:

    # md5sum /etc/X11/xorg.conf >/var/lib/xfree86/xorg.conf.md5sum

    direct rendering: No

After many hours of failure and not being able to find the problem on other forums I thought I would seek out help here to get hardware acceleration enabled on my ATI 9600 using to proprietary ATI driver.

Well, I finally got DRI enabled. I found that there is a newer version of the ATI driver available on the ATI site. I had an older one. Now glxinfo shows Direct rendering: Yes.

Here is the problem. glxgears only gives me ~250fps. I would like to use xgl, so glxgears needs to be 700 - 1000fps. I have an ATI Radeon Mobility X600 card in my laptop. Is this 250fps a limitation of the card, or is there something else that I need to do to achieve 3D acceleration?

Thanks in advance for any help!
