    Code:
    xwmconfig
    and choose gnome

    try this again too
    Code:
    hdparm -d1 /dev/dvd
if that works you need to add it to a startup script so it happens on boot

I sent a reply earlier and maybe I didn't hit submit reply, but I'm back.
    Thanks,fvs

Hi Kern, Where almost there, But I don't understand the following, Are the right?

    yeah I'd probably use 2.6

use the 2.6 kernel packages off the 2nd cd and use installpkg or upgradepkg to install them.

    Unhappy

I installed 2.6.17, however I don't know if I did it right, I downloaded from slack site kernel-modules-2.6.17.13-i486-1, Then pkgtool to install, After that I went to follow instruction from Kernel Compile Guide for 2.6.0 at linuxquestion.org and I can't follow up on the rest, I just screwed up, My bad.

Now, make install still works great as long as the above is done. So...once the kernel source is downloaded and extracted to /usr/src, you can then create a new link.

    From /usr/src

    rm -f linux
    ln -s linux-2.6.0 linux
    cd /linux

    make mrproper

    root@fvs:~# make mrproper
make: *** No rule to make target `mrproper'. Stop.
    root@fvs:~# cd /linux
-su: cd: /linux: No such file or directory
    root@fvs:~#

Then copy your existing .config to your new kernel source tree...
    make mrproper

Then copy your existing .config to your new kernel source tree...

    cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.?/.config /usr/src/linux

make oldconfig (to use your old config and choose to add/not add the new options)
    or...
make menuconfig (to use your old config and tweak further)
    or...
make whatever other type you like (xconfig, gconfig, etc.)

Just exit and save the configuration, then...

    make
    su -c "make modules_install"
    make install

just use the packages off the 2nd cd, no point compiling your own , from source.
