Installing Slack on Dell laptop

I'll be getting my Dell laptop soon. Right now, it's a tossup about whether it'll be a Slack 11 or Fedora 6 machine, depends upon hardware configuration problems. I'm mostly concerned about the display drivers, wifi, and bluetooth operating under Slack.

1) The display drivers:
The Dell comes with the ATI X1400. It's a widescreen display, 1050*1440 I think. Any known issues / remidies?

2) The wifi card is the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945abg WLAN Mini-Card. Again, any known issue/ remedies?

3) There were no bluetooth hardware options, so it comes with whatever is stock for Dell.

I'm running Slackware 11.0 on my Dell 600m. Video, sound and wireless work fine with just a bit of tweaking. In order to configure sound, I had to run

alsamixer

followed by

alsactl store

.

Since I wanted to use the 2.6 kernel, I also needed to install the headers and modules from the extra directory on CD 2.

Finally, installing ndiswrapper got wireless networking (Intel iw2200b/g) running without any problems.

Hopefully, things will go as smoothly for you as they did for me.

Thanks for the encouragement. What screen resolution do you have? Is it widescreen?

Resolution is 1024x768.

Hm, that's what I thought. You have a standard resolution. I've heard of problems with widesreen resolutions. The machine still hasn't gottin here, so we'll see how it goes when it does.
