I'm fairly new to Slackware, but I do know enough to get myself by in linux. I tried alsaconf and everything checked out ok... unmuted everything with alsamixer....but still nothing. Any suggestions? What info would you like to help solve this?

I can't say why it's not working.
I did google your chip set and there are a lot of posts re: problems with this sound chip so you may want to check them out. I googled "linux ens1371 Creative Labs Ectiva EV1938".
The other thing to consider is that sometimes sound problems are resolved by upgrading the kernel. If you are using the default 2.4, consider installing 2.6.
