Network and sound, Slack 11
I can't get slack 11 to run my nic or sound. for some reason no other distro will install on my system. I have tried opensuse, vector, arch ubuntu, myah, mepis, sam & some others. most hang on install. I did get opensuse to setup partition table & got to play tetris, but just hung there. ubuntu live booted but the install icon did nothing. I even tried my old retial mandrake 8.1. slax worked perfectly so I tried slackware 11.0. it runs great but no sound or network. is there something i con change in my bios to help or is my Asus p4sp-mx mobo just a piece of crap?
Thanks..................

have you tried "alsaconf" in the CLI in your Slack 11.0?
i am using Slack 10.2 (soon to be 11.0) and VL 5.1 SOHO and 5.8GOLD no problem so far in the sound category.. i just used alsaconfP4 1.8, 1G DDR ram, 64mb GF2 MX400, 80G WD and 40G Maxtor, ECS mobo. Playing XP,Slack 12.0 and Vector Linux 5.8 GOLD, STD 6.0 Zenwalk 4.6.1, OpenBSD 3.9

Fisrt there is something wrong, why all these these dirtro that you tried won't work ? we should think about this before configuring Slack, so please tell us about your hardware, wish processor you are using and about your RAM to see for what this problem related to ,and after we can go ahead to configure your sound/network.
lspci (as root ) and post the output of this commands to see all your pci hardwares.

For your sound card try to run as rood alsaconf and follow the steps to configure your sound.
for the network card,(SIS 900) this is completely supported by the Linux Kernel,to run ifconfig and post the output of that command.

Ah yes,i know what is your problem,if you installed Slackware 11.0 it comes with 2.4.33 kernel wish doesn't have too much hardware support (basically it's used for servers) ,know all what you need it's to use another kernel, you can use the one wish inside the Slack DVD in the testing directory called 2.6.17 ,don't forget to install it's modules also and after enable the udev instead of hotplug, go to /etc/rc.d and chmod +x rc.udev
chmod -x rc.hotplug.
after the installing of that kernel chack your lilo/grub configuration.
If you still have any problem post here please.

check your fstab file wish is inside /etc there is something like
/dev/hdb /mnt/dvd udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
make sure that you have a directory called /mnt/dvd
mount the Volume mount dvd and install the extra/linux-2.6.17.13.
you can also use :
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb dvd where hdb is the name of the inode dvd device and dvd is a directory.
post here if there is any news.Linux is not only an operating system, it's a philosophy.
