Welcome to the forums!

Take a look at the Xorg FAQ for possible causes of "no screens found":

ha ha ha ! sorry not laughing at you smit. i just joined this forum seeking an answer to the same question since other forums have been equally mute. looks like we're on our own.
i have an old dell laptop with an intel graphics chipset.
typing startx or X at the command line gets the
i got some brief joy when i did:Code:(EE) VESA(0): No matching modes (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
X -configure
you have done this ?
for me suddenly X tries to launch but then hangs until i turn the machine off and start again (not even able to switch between terminals)
a hint may lie in the following lines which -configure writes to standard out after it has finished writing the new config file which almost works:
any ideas ?Code:(EE) Failed to load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/apm_drv.so (EE) Failed to load module "apm" (Loader failed, 7)

post your xorg.conf file and tell me wish intel vga you have .
make sure that you have the apm_drv.so in that directory.
