X Windows Error After Installing Gnome Slackbuild 3.2

Hello,

I'm a Linux newbie who has been using Slackware for about a month. After a successful install of the Gnome Slackbuild script 3.2, I get an error. I'm using Slackware 13.37 on a Toshiba Netbook NB505 with a 1.66MHZ Intel Atom processor, 2G RAM, & 250G HD. Here are the details.

A forum message told me to remove the ftp/http words at the beginning of links, so they won't appear below in the slapt-getrc file or websites. I installed Gnome Slackbuild 3.2 this way: lynx --source gnomeslackbuild.org/net-install | bash. I think it was successful because there were no errors. However, when I used startx there are only verticle lines in the background with a dialog box in front that says: "couldn't share keys", with an OK option. The mouse at that time is usable, & I select OK it it says: "Can't publish discovery information on the network." This happens even if I'm logged in as root.

I thought it might be problem with X Windows so I ran xorgsetup & it went OK. Also, the XFCE & KDE desktops work fine, which leads me to think that the /etc/X11/xorg.conf is configured properly. I removed Gnome Slackbuild 3.2 with this command: removepkg /var/log/packages/*gsb. Then reinstalled it & got the same error. After that, I removed X, XAP, & KDE through slackware setup program, rebooted, added them. Then I reinstalled Gnome Slackbuild using lynx, which went OK. However, I still get the same error.

So I tried the manual method described in the gnomeslackbuild.org/download/]Download & Install : GNOME SlackBuild - a GNOME distribution for Slackware Linux article. After installing slapt-get I checked the /etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc to see that I'm using the slackware mirror SOURCE=osuosl.org/pub/slackware/slackware-13.37/:OFFICIAL & the Gnome Slackbuild mirror SOURCE=//mirrors.gnomeslackbuild.org/gsb/gsb-3.2_slackware-13.37/:PREFERRED. Then I issued these commands: slapt-get --update & slapt-get --add-keys, which went OK. Then I ran this command slapt-get --install glib2 gtk+2, which said something like it was already the latest versions of them. After that I ran slapt-get --install gsb-desktop, which said that zero packages were installed because they were already there.

I still get the same errors in X Windows & the log files. I found nothing specific to this error on the internet, however, articles with similar errors suggested I that check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log & /var/log/syslog files, which I included below. I only listed the information that I thought was necessary which pertained to errors, so if more information is necessary let me know. Any constructive suggestions would be appreciated.

My first question to you regarding your issues here is did you install/update the prerequisite software (dependencies) before installing the Gnome 3.2 SlackBuild?

Thanks for responding. Somehow the information I had on what you mentioned was not included in my post when I thought I placed it in there. Anyway, regarding the comment on gnomeslackbuild.org/download/, that says, "You must first upgrade and replace all packages marked as required in the 'Replaced Packages List,'" yes, I ran slapt-get --install glib2 gdk-pixbuf, etc.

The messages were something like this:
gli2 up to date
gnome-icon-theme up to date
libnotify up to date
no such package: gdk-pixbuf
no such package: startup-notifications
It also said that following packages will be upgraded: gst-plugins-good. Then it asked Yes/No to upgarde it. It is possible that at that point I hit enter, which defaulted to No, & the package was not installed. However, I reinstalled all of these packages all are there except gdk-pixbuf & startup-notifications. The slapt-get command tells me that these packages don't exist. I went agead & installed gdk-pixbuf2 which it said already existed. The package gdk-pixbuf is available on slackbuilds.org, so I downloaded & installed it. So the last requirement is the startup-notifications package, which is on the slackbuild site & does not exist according to slapt-get.

Also, I've noticed that the the xorg messages that are available when I select CTRL ALT F1 at the X Windows error that I originally described, are different than the ones in the log files I listed. So I'm in the process of finding or generating an xsession-error log.

Let me first commend you for attempting Slackware even though your are a relatively new GNU/Linux adventurer. While Slackware has been my primary operating system for many years, I wouldn't normally recommend it as a starter distribution. Slackware is not the BIG RED EYED demon that many will contend that it is. It is, however, a distribution that assumes a certain level of competence from its users. I can tell from your posts here that you are no dummy. With that said...

Slackware is a unique distribution. It is designed to be simple and uncomplicated. This does NOT mean it's easy to use. Simple and uncomplicated often lead to more work by the user to achieve goals within the operating system. Installing software from outside (non-Slackware) sources is one of those occasionally not-so-easy-to-achieve goals.

Gnome, as you know, is non-native to the Slackware environment. That's not to say that it won't work. Any Desktop Environment/Windows Manager should work on any distribution of GNU/Linux as long as dependencies are met. In your case, when you state that you utilized slapt-get to update the prerequisite software before attempting to install the Gnome 3.2 SlackBuild, that may not have been sufficient. Slapt-get is only working with software that is in the Slackware repositories. Some of that required software in the list I posted above may NOT be in the standard Slack repos. You may have to install them via your own compiling from source or from existing SlackBuilds (available from sites like SlackBuild.org).

I do not believe this is an X issue at all. The fact that you can run KDE and Xfce (my DE/WM of choice, by the way) tells me that X is functioning as it should. I would strongly suggest that you do NOT mess with X in any way. You don't want to inadvertently trash it when it isn't even the issue. Instead, I'm relatively sure that this is still a dependency issue. Were I you, I would use one of Slackware's native package manager apps to check and see just what exactly you have installed on that system with regards to those dependencies in the list above. You can check their availability/status by using the slackpkg command from the command line. Like this...

As root:

# slackpkg search <application name>

For example, let's say you want to start checking those dependencies in that list above. You would do the following:

The list below shows all packages with name matching "glib2".

You can search specific files using "slackpkg file-search file".

You see, Slackpkg displayed the current status of the glibc software on my own system. It shows it as being installed and gives me the version number. Here's another example:

The list below shows all packages with name matching "gnome-icon-theme".

You can search specific files using "slackpkg file-search file".

As you can see, Slackpkg will give you all the info you need to determine if you have all of the required dependencies installed for that Gnome 3.2 SlackBuild to work properly for you. I would recommend that you take this step first. Once you've checked/added the required dependencies, if there is still an issue with Gnome, at least we'll know that you have it installed properly.

Thanks again for your reply. I've been using Ubuntu for over a year, learning some commands here & there. I decided my next distro to start learning more about Linux, would be either Arch, Gentoo, or Slackware, & went with Slackware. I understand it is an experienced users distro & it might take a long time to get the things that are already functional with Ubuntu working properly.

After I get Gnome working OK it will be recompiling the kernel so my wireless NIC will work. For now I'd like to stick with Gnome rather than learning another desktop, although KDE & XFCE seem to be excellent. I agree that it seems to be a desktop issue rather than X. I probably should have mentioned that I was not running an earlier version of Gnome before I ran the slackbuild. So, if I understand the step on the gnomeslackbuild.org/download page which states: "Important: For users upgrading from a previous GNOME SlackBuild installation, please make sure you're upgrading all the required packages. See Required Package Upgrades for more information," then I don't need to install the packages below, right?

However, before I realized that I went ahead & installed the dependencies. According to the results of the slapt-get command, all the packages were installed, except for gdk-pixbuf & startup-notifications, which it said didn't exist. I found the startup-notifications (I think on the slackbuild site) & installed it through pkgtool.

The gdk-pixbuf was downloaded as a slackbuild script from pkgs.org. I unpacked the buildscript in the / directory, looked at the version in the .buildscript which was already the same version as the source, so it didn't need to be changed. Then I copied the compressed source file into the newly created gdk-pixbuf directory. After that I ran the script which copied a binary install file to tmp. I then went to tmp & installed it successfully with pkgtool.

To verify the installed packages, I did an ls of the /var/log/packages directory to make sure the two that I had just manually installed were there, & they seemed to be. I now realize the best method is to use the slackpkg command you mentioned.

After that I ran startx & initially got the same error. Then an additional dialog box appeared which told me that there was a problem. Although I should have recorded that error too, I deceded to reinstall the X, XAP, & KDE series by booting to a flashcard & running slackware setup. I understand now that I probably should not have done that.

After that I logged in as root at the login prompt rather than switching to root through su, which would not have given me the correct shell environment, from what I understand. Then I ran the lynx --source gnomeslackbuild.org/net-install | bash, once more. However, before I did this, I did'nt install those "Required Package Upgrades" dependencies mentioned on the gnomeslackbuild.org/download page, because this is not an upgrade from a previous version of Gnome. I rebooted after the install, & now I'm getting the original error that I first mentioned.

I now have other information obtained with startx 2>.xsession-errors, that I've posted here. I'm going to start searching for these errors to see what I can come up with. If it looks as though Gnome can't be installed through slackbuild, I'll look into downloading & installing it from source, although this too will probably be complicated. Thank you again for taking the time to respond.

I had this really long and detailed reply typed up when I clicked the wrong button here on this forum and POOF! All gone. Don't you hate it when that happens?

Anyway...

The fact that you have multiple errors with Gnome on Slackware combined with the fact that you've done quite a bit if installing/removing, tinkering, tweaking, etc., it might very well be a good idea to start this project off with a clean slate. Were this me doing this, I would wipe this Slackware installation out of existence and reinstall a nice new Slackware on my system. If you still plan on attempting the Gnome SlackBuild, I would install the new Slack with Xfce as the DE/WM. I would do this because Xfce requires many of the same Gnome library files and other software that Gnome requires. It might give you a head start. Take notes and take your time when you attempt your Gnome install again. MAKE SURE that all the Gnome SlackBuild dependencies are met just as they ask before installing the Gnome SlackBuild.

Luck with it! Have fun. Once it becomes drudgery, though, seek alternatives. :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I will go ahead & fdisk & reformat the slack partition & reinstall it.

All of the packages listed in the "Required Package Upgrades" were not installed the last time I did the GnomeSlackBuildScript. On the gnomeslackbuild.org/download page, I see: "Important: For users upgrading from a previous GNOME SlackBuild installation, please make sure you're upgrading all the required packages. See Required Package Upgrades for more information." I didn't install them because it seems to me that those are only necessary if it is an upgrade.

Slackware 13.37 does not ship with Gnome, right? I installed all of the X & K packages & didn't see it. So it seems to me that this would not have been an upgrade from a previous version of Gnome. So, those listed in the "Required Package Upgrades" would be uncecessary, correct?

No. Slack does not come with a Gnome DE/WM in its native repository.

I think you may be misunderstanding the wording of that Gnome SlackBuild "Required Packages Upgrades" notice. While you may not be updating a previous Gnome SlackBuild installation, you still require ALL dependencies to be satisfied on your fresh new installation. With this in mind, be sure to check that each and every one of those listed dependencies in that list provided by Gnome SlackBuild is indeed installed and at least up to the versions they mention.

They don't call them dependencies for nothing. ;)
