I am basically trying not to make changes to my Linux box right now. I am still using OpenSuSE 10.2 and I am waiting for the box version of 10.3 because my Internet connection is too slow. I did download the 8.42.3 ATi driver for my X1600 card and I tried to install it. Actually, it was a waste of time because I did not expect it to work. The documentation for the 10.2 version says that I need an older version of "glibc" than I have currently installed. So it was no surprise that it did not work.

Note that somewhere on the ATi website there was a warning that 8.42.3 was not stable and that 8.40.x was recommended for now. I have an 8.40.x also, so I might re-install that one. Actually, I think the last version that I installed was 8.38.x (which I still have on my drive somewhere), and that was working well enough. But the new "glibc" might not allow that one to work again either. So until I get OpenSuSE 10.3, I might just leave the computer using the generic driver.

Anyway, I suggest that you check your "glibc" version to see if you have that much correct. Otherwise, report your findings to ATi and wait for the next version.

Also, I think that ATi is probably putting most of their efforts in the 32-bit version first and not testing as much on the 64-bit version.

I eventually uninstalled the latest drivers and reverted to the good old 8.40.x ones.

As far as the "glibc" issue you mention, I am not sure whether any comments right now would lead to anything, rather I would confuse you so I would let that to somebody more experienced than me.

Finally, concerning the effort ATI is putting... that I would leave it as "no comment". Who knows. I am very glad though that they released the 8.42.x version. Let's wait a little more since the first step is made.

There was a new driver released on Dec. 20, 2007. I think it is an 8.43.x.

Same problems; nothing good. Actually, even worse, i tried to uninstall the newest driver, and the uninstallation did not really work; it rather left traces.

On March 5, 2008 AMD/ATi released "ATI Catalyst™ 8.3" display driver kit. I can report that 8.2 did not work because "Catalyst" would not boot, nor would "Chromium".

I am not putting ATI graphic drivers onto my system. It will make it too unstable and unpredictable. I am with just 2D, and the machine is stable and i know what is going on. Of course, when i get a new laptop i will make sure that it will NOT have ATI hardware in since for some time now i use exclusively Linux.

I know you are no longer interested, but I noticed that ATI released their latest "ATI Catalyst™ 8.5" display driver kit, I think on May 21, 2008. I have not tried the 8.4 kit or the newest 8.5 kit yet. It is theoretically possible that it is working now. . . .
