System hangs after 10.1 to 10.3 upgrade

Hello,

I've been using v10.1 for the past 18 months and generally I've been a happy camper, except for suspend-to-disk and WOL, which didn't work properly. I downloaded the v10.3 DVD iso image, and tried to upgrade directly from the DVD.

There were some problems with inconsistent program versions (including Mozilla firefox) that I had to delete before being allowed to go further. During the first reboot after the install, the screen balnked out and the boot just stopped. The last on-screen message displayed was
"Setting up service network" done

Can anyone help?
Thanks very much,
Paul

There were some big differences between 10.1 and 10.3, everything from the package manager to the booting system. If possible I would recommend backing up your data and running a clean install of 10.3. There are so many differences in the system layout that you could end up chasing for weeks and still never have a completely correct system.

Thanks BigTom. I'll do a clean install.

PS : Out of interest, is it possible to revert back to 10.1, without affecting the current installation?

Go raibh maith agat!

It's possible, but not in any feasible way. You would need to downgrade all of the packages you have installed, most likely individually and by force over several hours (days?) of heartbreak.

Actually let's just say no

If you are going completely clean and redoing your partitions it's handy to keep a seperate root partition from /home as you can then image it before doing any upgrades. Check out Partimage for information, it's quick and can get you out of lots of trouble. Of course it's a bit scary if you aren't comfortable with partition layouts.
