just want a shell. I have everything in SUse 10 running fine, but it always boots to Gnome. I dont want it booting to x server at all,

i just want to boot to simple terminal prompt to log in..later i can start STARTX if I want to , but how do I stop it from going to Gnome??? thanks

You can amed /etc/inittab so that the default runlevel is 3 rather than 5. Runlevel 3 is multiuser with networking, and runlevel 5 is multiuser with networking and graphics.

thank you for your reply. I went to system services but do not see inittab when the other services that have 3's 5's like you mention..

No you just need to amend the file /etc/inittab directly. If you do it through YaST you will need to switch off several services and it is more difficult to reverse.

You can edit the file directly or through Yast. If you start runlevel editor and select expert mode you should be able to 'set default runlevel after booting to:' and select runlevel 3.
