in Yast, if i go to network services -> xinetd, it shows enabled.

under xinetd, both of the lines showing telnet have a dash in the status column, indicating that they are both inactive.

i ran the commands chkconfig -s xinetd on and -s telnet on, the cursor just returned to the prompt.

chkconfig -l shows the inetd based services at the end and telnet is off.

netstat -anp | grep 23 does not show port 23.

chkconfig -l shows xinetd on in columns 3 and 5

chkconfig -l shows telnet to be on .

netstat -anp | grep 23 shows the following:

tcp 0 0.0.0.0.0:23 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 3729/xinetd

i'm not sure what all that means but to me it looks like port 23 is open and the telnet daemon is running.

it is almost working. if i reboot the linux box and then use ICE.TCP to connect to the telnet port, i will get a login screen and i can login, but after about 30-60 seconds, the screen freezes and the keyboard is locked.

i can also connect using ssh with Putty and again i get a login screen and i can login but the screen will lock up in about 30-60 seconds
