i have suse 11 kde4, Linux kernel 2.6.25.5-1.1-pae.. installed kinternet, smpppd, ppp.. smpppd is on in Runlevel 3 and 5
have Laptop 56 Kpbs Ambit modem
Vendor ESS technology
Internal PCI bus
ES2828/2839 SuperLink Modem (Winmodem)

device identifier 75832


i didnt add any drivers was hoping suse 11 kde4 did that.. so need driver for suse 11

I'm having a difficult time finding anything about your modem. It is internal? Could you open a terminal and do:

lspci

Might be:

/sbin/lspci

Find the line about your modem and post it here exactly as it appears please.

i have the xp drivers for my modem but would rather use a lnux driver if possible
and dont know how to install then

From everything I've seen about this modem, (Here's an example) there doesn't appear to be any avenues at all for getting it working under Linux.

A good alternative would be to use a PCMCIA 56k modem or an external modem.

I've not used the Zonet but as you can see, they report it works with Linux. The Actiontec, I do have and have used under Linux and Windows for years. It has given me stellar performance and service. Both are reasonably priced.

i have an actiontec external but the cord doesnt fit into any of the connectors
at the back. there are only a Parallel port LPT1, colored burgundy and External monitor VGA. so do i need to get something that fits in a parrele port, doesnt sound right
so are zonet and actiontec the best to get?
is there an external modem that suse 11 kde4 will recognize and install drivers, so i dont need to?? after i find an external am i suppose to look for linux drivers or use windows xp drivers i pulled off the software for the modem???

Almost all external modems work right out of the box with Linux, since most are true modems and not winmodems. Your Actiontec will work great and there will be no need to install drivers.

A bummer you don't have the correct port for it. That can be overcome with a serial port to pcmcia card, but you have to consider the cost of such a device as compared to just buying a 56k PCMCIA device like the Zonet. Then again, you'd likely get better performance from the Actiontec. Hard call, but either way, I think you can get connected. You'll just have to spend a few dollars.

By the way, the new Actiontecs, (unlike mine and yours) also have USB connectivity along with serial port, so a newer one still might be better money spent.

I'd really buckle down and use Google to explore and research all these options and do what you think is going to be the best thing for you.
