I am setting a linux based server in about a month and I am wondering if suse is stable enough to be used in a commerical web server including Apache, PHP, MySQL, mail server, cpanel etc.

I am particularly interested in expiriences involving machines that are running AMD_64 (Opteron to be more specific), but any feedback is helpful.

Any distro can be stable enough to be a server. SuSE 9.1 is not designed to be a server out of the box, but it IS designed to be stable out of the box. With Linux, as long as you don't install the "bleeding edge" of everything, then you will be stable.

The latest kernel releases and software releases usually present some bugs/instability. They may not be prominent, but they're there because we all make mistakes. You just have to know what you have installed and keep a look out for bugs/exploits in your version of the software. That is the job of system administrator.

So I guess my whole point here is that any distro is as stable as you make it.

Exaclty, but Suse is (like sarumont said) not a server distro, it is geard tword a desktop and has a GUI along with several other features and many packages that are not needed in a server enviroment. Depending on your level of linux experiance, something like slackware debian or gentoo will probably suite your needs better.

if you would like to use suse software take a look at suse enterprise server 8 or redhat AS 3..
