[SOLVED] Understanding SUSE kernel install

Hi,

could I ask for help in my understanding surrounding the way SUSE uses the Linux Kernel please.

I'm trying to resolve an issue I'm in the middle of that will require me to do a fresh install followed by installing kernel default, gcc, make and kernel sources. (Full details on that are in the included link).

http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/sus...e-drivers.html

As one of the requirements was to delete kernel pae I realised that I'm a little unclear as to how Linux uses and installs kernels at this level. I have already used Yast to locate and download kernel default and kernel source on my current SUSE 11 install to test the process.

Is it the case that Yast would down load these Kernels to /boot first then install them to /usr/src directories? Or possibly vis versa where the source is downloaded to /usr/src then installed for use in /boot, which thinking about it seems more likely.

Is it then the case that the Kernel that runs will be just which ever one grub is told to point to (e.g. kernel pae in /boot) with edits to grubs menu.lst

If I wanted to delete a Kernel to use another where am I actually removing it from. I have read lots of closely related stuff via google and learnt a lot (about compiling, different kernel types and modules etc) but little of it directly address my questions and also are not usually suse specific and I would be really grateful for any pointers on this as it will further my general understanding as well as help with my current issue.

...just feel like theres a missing link in my understanding.

Thanks

I've now found when exploring the process of replacing the kernel that many of the explanations cover the detail I'm after. For any that find my question on this forum by way of searches. I would recommend this exellent instructions on compiling new kernel (suse specific) as it filed in the missing blanks for me:
