i have suse 11.1, i have microtek slimscan c3 scanner but in scanner window it says no scanner recognized by this driver. how to install the scanner?

However Suse uses sane-backend for scanners. so it wont make difference by using Xsane. you can try flegita.

i downloaded the file because its not available through 'software management'. i'm not sure where should i extract it.

This scanner is reported to work with the microtek2 backend:
SANE: Supported Devices

This is available in the sane-backends package, which can be installed using YaST.

sane-backends are installed by default in suse..but its not working with sane
I think this scanner got LPT port, may be you should check if the printer is getting detected on system correctly.

According to "SANE: Supported Devices" page, my scanner has complete support but also mentions its 'unmaintained'(?).

My printer is properly detected and connected.

When I go to the Scanner option in Hardware, there is an option for Other->Restart Detection. This uncovers a USB Scanner (vendor=0x0c45, product=0x6019) at libusb:001:004. Driver, it says, is not configured. I do not have a USB Scanner so it seems to be mis-detecting (this scanner or detecting something else). If I edit this scanner, I choose Microtek Slimscan C3 (which mentions complete functionality), it goes through Setup and finishes at 100%. But I still return to the page to see the scanner is 'not configured'.

The backend is unmaintained because its perfectly working and it dont need any more upgrades.

rightclick gnomescan-0.4.0.4.tar.gz and extract it.

I don't mean to interfere with your help, b2bwild, but I think that I may have some info.

It seems that you should be concentrating on configuring sane to use the existing microtek2 frontend. Looking over the sane documentation, it has a few steps that should be followed, ending with configuring the file /etc.sane.d/microtek2.conf file. It is set to work with a SCSI connection by default. I am not sure what the setting for parallel port should be. You may need to do some research on this. First, read the man page.

A little more info that I uncovered.

You need to have the parport module loaded.
It also should support EPP (Enhanced Parallel Port), but that's as much as I know.
