Lost KDE3.5 login and X server

I use Suse 11.1 dual boot with vista in the MBR.

I can use windows.

I can use Suse with KDE 3.5 in safe mode

If i try and use Suse 11.1 from the start up screen it goes to the text only

If I run sax2 as root it says that there is no X server?

Any ideas.

This started when on my lap top when I tried to correct the powersave function, which has always had a mind of it's own.
Locking screen
reducing brightness.

I must have done something.

I have run the repair utility on the DVD and I do now have the MBR back, as I had lost this and access to windows.

When the grub boot menu appears, select the safe mode and type 3 at the bottom boot options line. This will boot you to run level 3.
Login as root and configure the xserver with sax2.
It will give a message about starting an xserver and you should get the test screen.
When done, exit sax and test that all is working by typing startx to start the xserver.
If all is well, reboot and everything should be fine.

Thanks for the posts.

The problem is now sorted and was due to an update which conflicted with the Xorg, causing the xserver not to start and Sax2 not run.

I had to many items in the repository and thus conflicts.

I was just going to ask that. The recent kernel update botched the install on my machine too; it installed the kernel but not the base modules that go with it... suddenly I had no video and no access to my non ext3 mounts (incl. /home, repo mirrors, and software library!)... oh, and no network access either. Luckily, I was able to mount my install DVD, downgrade the kernel and get back running.

SuSE devs, wake up!!!
