Total newbie here. No, please don't all grone! I've just turned to Linux and installed Suse 11.1. Is there supposed to be a player installed that runs the various video formats? Some formats say a codec is required, others appear in Banshee, but they don't run. Where have I gone wrong?

Most linux distros do not ship with certain patent encumbered or proprietary software which is often necessary to play many media formats.

Here is some more info and a guide on how to get install what you need yourself.

Add these repositories to your Yast -> Software -> Software Repositories:

http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/11.1

Provides availability to VideoLanClient and a bunch of supporting codecs, incl. libdvdcss.

http://packman.unixheads.com/suse/11.1/

Probably the single most useful repository for OpenSuSE. Contains hundreds of programs and packages which can be installed via Yast, including w32codec-all.

After adding those repositories, open Software Management and install the programs and supporting packages you desire for your content. I suggest at least VLC and MPlayer. Between the two (along with the supporting codecs, most automatically selected and installed), I have yet to come across a common format media file I can't play (including some that didn't play right in Windows).
