SUSE DVD install problem

hi everyone, I've been trying to install SUSE 9.2 for a few days now. I'm having a problem where everytime the install gets to "Loading data into RAM disk" the install locks up. Here's what I've tried to fix the problem:

In case you were wondering this is the exact file name of the image I'm using:

SUSE-Linux-9.2-FTP-DVD.iso (3,284,710KB on Win XP Pro)

1) Checksum on DVD image file(checked out fine)
2) remove slave HD
3) run a single HD
4) Run a different HD
5) install safe version

The wierd thing is I can boot into recovery mode just fine. So I get this error everytime I try to install and I'm not sure how to fix it... Any ideas?

Oh and I let the program run for over 14 hours once to ensure it was not just doing something that took a long, long time.

Thanks

Are you installing the 32-bit or 64-bit version? I had a similar freezing problem with an ASUS motherboard trying to install the 64-bit version of SuSE 9.2.

How much RAM do u have aswell? If it's a computer with pretty much anything less than 90MB, it will lock up and u will need to activate SWAP space.

P3 733Mhz
384MB of RAM

I am running a memory test right now to ensure the ram is good though I did one about a month ago and it passed fine.

Could there be a problem with using RAM sticks of different size or possible of different frequencies(one might be 100Mhz while the other is 133Mhz)? Maybe different CAS latency can cause an issue?

Thanks for the help so far

Different Speeds or CAS might affect it in such a way. If 1 of the sticks is at least a 128 stick, try taking the smaller one out, so u have 1 stick > 100MB, and try it with just the one stick in.

well I did the memory test and it all came out ok. So I then pulled a memory stick(256MB left) and tried the install, still it locks up. Could it be beacuse I have an onboard NIc and two identical PCI nics?

Anymore ideas at all?

Thanks for the help so far

I have the same problem as what you got, I install Suse in my old Mainboard and works just fine. but when I upgrade and use P4P800-X mainboard of Asus, 80Gb HDD 8Mb buffer, 1.2Gb memory, it hangs up at Yast can't even install.

Maybe try taking the PCI NIC's out. This is a bit clutching at straws, but if there is IRQ clashes, that might be holding it up.

Did you buy the SuSE DVD in the box etc? If so, could you try getting support from SuSE Forums on the issue?

I ran a check of my DVD media last night and it turns out there's a bad sector on the retail dual-layer DVD 1. Funny that only ASUS boards seem to be affected by it (installed fine on my old MSI). I'd call SuSE for a replacement, but since 9.3 came out today I really don't think it's worth it, personally.

I'm using the ISO from the website, but since 9.3 is out I'm going to download that today and try it out tonight. I'll keep you all posted.
