If it's hopeless, just say so. Don't leave me checking the forum every day.

I swapped out the memory yesterday with a different computer, but there wasn't really a change, so it's not that.

My computer froze seven times in the last hour.

I suspect it's Azureus, somehow. The frequency of freezing is higher from 1-4 am GMT, which is about the time the rest of the world is off from work and using the 'net.

I've got port 8888 open for Azureus but even when Azureus isn't open, I'm getting:

Aug 16 04:03:24 linux kernel: SFW2-INext-ACC-TCP IN=eth1 OUT= MAC=00:26:54:0d:f7:8c:00:30:bd:ff:eb:7c:08:00 SRC=220.231.75.106 DST=192.168.2.5 LEN=48 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=115 ID=56844 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=4544 DPT=8888 WINDOW=64240 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0 OPT (020405AC01010402)

With various other IP addresses.

I set up an 'application gateway' in my router firewall with a TCP trigger port of 8888 and, correct me if I'm wrong, shouldn't that only be open if I have a program open asking to use that port, and not keep the port open constantly? However, I do have 8888 just plain open on my firewall, since I'm on a network.

I've disenabled port 8888 on the router, and Azureus is still downloading, but the message I'm getting in system log is now:

Aug 16 04:16:58 linux kernel: SFW2-INext-DROP-DEFLT IN=eth1 OUT= MAC= SRC=192.168.2.5 DST=239.255.255.250 LEN=129 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=1 ID=0 DF PROTO=UDP SPT=8008 DPT=1900 LEN=109

Pleease someone translate? I'm not a computer person. I get the mac address thing, the ethernet, the source, and I assume DST is the subnet mask..but beyond that...I've no clue.

Any one have any ideas to offer? It's getting incredibly frustrating.

I had a similar problem when running bit torrent in Windows when I was downloading an iso from Mandrake last year. Within 45 minutes my computer would lock up or instantly reboot. I won't use any P2P program because there's way too many assholes on the internet that love to screw with a person's system. If I can't get a file from either http or ftp then I don't need it.

In fact most systems I've worked on recently that are overrun with virus/worms the person has been using P2P programs.

So you're bidding on it being a virus and whatnot? What sort of anti-virus checking software is there for SuSe? I figured I was fairly safe with legit torrent files on a non-standard (Not Windows) OS..

No, I don't think it's a virus. I think you've got someone trying to hack into your system.

They won't get very far with just a user.

And? What do you suggest I do if someone's trying to hack my computer? Unplug my router and hope he goes away?

Try un-installing Azureus and see if the problems go away.

One step ahead of you. I've been running Azureus-free since 6:36 this morning, and still no problem. However, on one occasion with Azureus running, there was a seven hour gap between reboots/freezes, so this may take a while to decide that Azureus is the victim.

And if it is? Should I try a different BitTorrent client for a while?

(For me, giving up my downloads is not an option.)

That's a decision you'll need to make

Have you opened up your ports to let Azureus in? In other words: Do you have a yellow smiley in the left hand corner or a green one? If it's yellow all the time then you get an NAT error meaning you have your ports closed, which is good for security. I have never had any troubles with Azureus ever. Opening ports in the router and making exceptions in your firewall aren't the greatest ideas so let me know if you happened to do that. I would just take it easy for now - don't use BT or any clients for a bit and see what happens. If this continues I dunno what other BT Clients are available for Linux but BitTornado is quite nice and I have used that in Windows before. BitComet is cool but, again I haven't any idea if it is for Linux or not. I would now install a few apps right now just to be sure: FireHOL, Firestarter, chkrootkit, Shorewall, ClamAV. I know it's a lot (three firewalls..) but you can never be too sure. Good luck.

same problem hee

hey quaenorde

a question, did you ever get sorted with your freeze problems. Im running suse 10 and azureus, sometimes in combinatin with amule, im also getting random system freezes, sometimes even with weird garbled scren output, always when azureus or amule is running, i know for a fact it isnt hackers or a security issue as i had closed ports with yellow smilies in azureus before i opened ports and had exactly the same problem as i am having now with open ports, infact i first thought it was the closed ports that where freezing my system.

sooo maybe ..if you haven't solved the prooblem yet.. i see your post was done quite awhile ago, so im hoping you hacve and that you can help me, but if you haven't maybe we caa help each other.

greets wernher
