"The system is going down..."

Hi, just installed Linux SuSE 9.3 still configuring my wlan, but that's not the problem now. After i'm logged in and doing something in some time i get a message(not like the message box with Ok button but just a text window) and it's saying this:
Code:
Broadcast message from root(date and time)
The system is going down for system halt NOW!
I don't know what's going on. Sometimes it happens after one minute when linux is loaded, sometimes it lets me do my job for 10 minutes... Any suggestions?
Thank you

Uh, looks like root is issuing a shutdown -h now. That's no good.

What does
Code:
tail -50 /var/log/messages
show you?

Hmmm.. Just noticed that "Critical temperature reached (62 C)"
But i know my processor gets very hot but it's normal! Under windows i ALWAYS have temperature around 65, and it gets 70 when i play a lot(at that time i stop)

How can i change that shutdown temperature?
Or maybe logs are telling you something else important?

Thank you..

*edit*
wow, it actualy reached 74 before that, how can that be possible? Does linux realy uses that much of my cpu? What can i do?

Interesting. Well, that explains the shutdowns.

I have to say I do not know enough about CPU temps to be comfortable giving you an answer. I would suggest doing some research, or maybe someone who is more intimately familiar can help.

One thing: How about opening the case and making sure your CPU fan did not come loose.

you could try adding some heatsink compound such as Artic Silver to the underside of the fan. You could also consider investing in a chasis fan, or like anomie said to check wether your cpu fan had come loose.

Dont have much in the way of helping here, maybe some more fans, or some liquid cooling going on...

Its when you start hearing:

"the system is down, the system is down....." - You know you're in trouble - that means your in a strongbad cartoon

Thank you guys i realized that it's no longer a linux problem.. Yeah i heard before suggestions to add a lot of that heatsink compound between fan and processor, haven't tried yet..

Well what would help me is to know how can i monitor the temperature of my cpu in linux? There are many different programs for windows.. Maybe there are any built in tools like that in SuSE 9.3?

Thank you
