Suse Linux is fantastic. Sure has come on a long way since I bought v6.

A number of things came to light last night when trying things out.....
Installing packages isn't that straightforward although I got to grips with Yast about 3 in the morning last night! I Wanted to set up midi / sequencer so I thought I'd try getting Muse to work ( which I did). However, I can't get midi working at the moment. I couldn't work out for the life of me how to get Jack working. I did in the end, but I asked myself why didn't Jack start automatically?

1) I have an onboard AC97 sound and a on board gameport. I havemanaged to start Jack ok and start Muse (Muse is great!) . Is there anyway of getting Midi working out of this gameport? I have all the leads e.t.c but no midi.

2) My USB Midiman 2x2 interface isn't working under Suse Linux 10. It's worked with other distributions. No lights on the unit at all. Tried unplugging/replugging. USB Is working as I tested it with an external hard drive. Any ideas anyone?

3) How do you Ghost something in Linux? What's the best program to use? Can Linux ghost on the fly whilst it is on? Can you ghost to a USB drive? I know how to use Ghost on Windows so there must be something very similar in Linux.

4) What do you put in the midi output bit ( say if you use Steem) when it asked for a midi device? It's currently set to dev/midi - It's more confusing compared to windows where you can normally just select a midi output port.

I think the biggest problem at the moment is installing packages in Linux - although Yast made thing reasonably easy. If things are to gain momentum they need to make this process so easy just by being able to click on an install program that set's everything up....I am still trying to 'make' packages but not getting too far.

They have made progress in package management. Its just not installed by default.

SuSE-10.0 comes with APT and APT4RPM. Rumour has it that SuSE-10.1 will come with the Smart Package Manager (which is claimed by some to be an evolutionary improvement over APT). One can install Smart Package Manager now, as Guru on his site has rpms for Suse-9.3 and SuSE-10.0.
