Hmm, I haven't had this problem before, but if I were you i'd try either x11 or xvidix. You could also try installing the vidix driver for mplayer from here. Choose the vidix driver which matches your video card. You may also need to install mplayer-vidix for the vidix support to work e.g. mplayer-vidix-ATI-Radeon for radeon series of cards etc...
I doesn't matter that the rpms are for FC3/4, they worked on my SuSE 9.3 install.
