SUSE 10.0 Won't Boot In Normal Mode After Install

I'm trying to set up a new pc with Suse 10.0. No Windows, no dual boot. Intel Motherboard with integrated audio, video and lan, Celeron D 3Ghz processor, 512MBRam, 1 DVD, 1 Seagate 160Gb SATA HD, no floppy. I used the dvd for the install and everything appeared to go without a hitch. A connection was made to the internet and all of the updates were downloaded and installed. After the install was completed, the system reboots and the two options of normal or failsafe are displayed. I choose normal and the system runs for a few seconds.

At that point, the screen goes black with an 'X' in the center of the screen. My only option is to power down and restart. The system boots properly in failsafe mode.

I have installed Suse 10.0, using the same copy, on a couple of older pc's without a problem, so I thought that it might be the SATA drive. I disconnected the SATA and installed a single EIDE drive. I repeated the install process a second time with the same results. I repeated the install process a third time, this time not processing the on-line updates, same result. I repeated the install a fourth time, this time using the CD's, with the same result.

Next, I pulled an old Suse 9.0 version that I had, just to see if it would install. I used the DVD for my install and it worked just fine. No on-line updates were available, which I expected. However, it installed and boots to the GUI as it should.

Finally, I disconnected the EIDE drive, reconnected the SATA drive and repeated the install of 9.0 using both the DVD and CDs. SuSE 9.0 doesn't recognize the SATA drive and I am unable to continue with the installation. I am assuming that 9.0 has a problem with the newer SATA drive.

Finally, I rebooted the 10.0 system in normal mode and pressed Esc to view the details. The list scrolls very quickly but I was able to get a few entries throughout the process. Those entries are:

fsck succeeded. Mounting root device read-write
Mounting root
Coldplug
Starting powersaved
Then, something about starting kde
and the screen goes blank with the 'X' in the middle.

Any thoughts as to what the problem might be? I'm new to Linux but have used HP-UX for many years and have no problems at the command line. I just don't know what commands to try in order to troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks, in advance, for your assistance.

I'm a newbie as well, but it seems to me that the issue is with the xserver (window display manager). You might want to wait a while after the machine boots to the x screen, perhaps it needs more time to load the GUI.

If you've already tried that; and you are reporting some KDE related error, there might be some way to boot the gnome interface, but I don't know how when you can't get xserver to start.
