I am running SUSE 10.1.
Video card is a Diamond Stealth 64 Video 2001 with S3 86C765 chip.
Monitor is ViewSonic E771.
SAX2 reports both card and monitor correctly.
If I set SAX2 resolution to 800x600 or 1024x768 or anything else, the resolution remains the same. It looks to me like 800x600.

I would appreciate suggestions.

Take a look at the config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Are the 1024 x 768 settings listed there and are the monitors vertical and horizontal settings in agreement with the specs for your monitor? If not, edit this file with the correct settings.

You can check what resolution you are running by going into YAST > Hardeare > Graphics Card and Monitor.

Yast says 1024x768 but it looks like 800x600 to me and the look doesn't change regardless of the Yast setting.

I have looked at xorg.conf and it's man page several times but still don't understand xorg.conf. I don't see how X gets from Device to Screen to Monitor to Modes to the particular Modeline to use. Please bear with me.

Monitor settings agree with E771 specs.
But Modelines do not agree with the User Guide, which has the following entries:
1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz H: 48.36 Khz V: 60 Hz
1024 x 768 @ 75 Hz H: 60 Khz V: 75 Hz <- Recommended setting
1024 x 768 @ 85 Hz H: 68.68 Khz V: 85 Hz

Strange indeed.

Try running sax2 from command line as root though theoretically it shouldn't make any difference.

Whoops, I see you already have done that. I don't know and I have to run now. Sorry I can't help at the moment.

You said the magic word. I was running Sax2 as root, but in an X command line window. I started Sax2 from the Linux command line (before starting X) and the configuration change worked.
