Suse 10.2 Hogging Memory

I've installed Suse 10.2, and every time I load it, it uses 1/2 my RAM. Any software I run after that increases it dramatically. Is there a way to find out why its doing this, because its getting real annoying. experiencing a lot of Crashes and not being able to burn DVDs.

AMD Athlong 64-bit 3700 2.2GHZ
1GB ram
250 GB HD

That is normal. Linux is not Windoz Most of the memory usage you see is for caches which are dynamicly allocatted.

Crashes are not normal. Can you give use some more information? Have you installed the latest patches?

I'll be using Pidigin, or browsing the web, or using IRC, and it will just Lock up like windoze 3.11. Gotta hit restart to get back up

When you say lockup is it just the mouse or also the keyboard? Try pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1. THis should take you to a full screen console. Press Ctrl-Alt-F7 to return to GUI. If this works you are not locked up but just lost the mouse. Do you have a Wireless Logitech mouse? If so there should be some buttons on th bottom to reset/reconnect the mouse. My mouse locks up a couple of times a day I just push the mouse reset buttons and am back in business. Last reboot 500+ hours.

Sorry, I forgot to answer to updated patches, yes they're all up to date.

By locked I mean locked. I've tried everything like you said a while ago. Even went as far as reinstalling suse a few times. I know it crashed cause some times HD status LED would be blinking and just stop when it locks up. Wired mouse, USB.

It it were me I'd run Spinright on the disk to see if there were bad sectors. But Spinright is not free ($79 I think). Gparted may have a disk testing program and is free but I personaly have not run it.

Hello, amyno,

That is very strange that You have crashes :: I have SuSE 10.2 on Thinkpad A31 with 1.6 MHz and 768 Mb Ram and it works smoothly.

Couldn't You please post the output of log files (Yast > Miscellanious > View System Logs) or at least the output of dmesg.

Regarding DVD burning (with K3b): There is an explicit warning in K3b that You must be root, otherwise there might be crashes of the program.

How did You install SuSe:: clean install or update from something else ???
Did You check the media ???

I'll give you the logs after I get home, at work right now. While burning DVD, it says Flushing Cache and gives me error and ejects DVD (wrote lead in).

Installed it fresh (right after formatting windows xP), off of a clean DVD disc.
