there must have been some tweak on the PAM modules as per my guess.
Boot into single user mode (kernel command prompt as single) and then try fixing it.

what bhaslinux meant was ......... as soon as u boot, u'll find boot menu for suse......there are boot options in the bottom of the screen ....... type single there & press enter....... it will take u to the single user mode...... try to correct d problem from there & then reboot...

after u r logged in as single user mode, start yast by giving the command yast....... & rest of the stuff u can configure from there. check out the security & logic manager & authentication........whether it is ldap, /etc/passwd, nis, samba......
ideally it should be local /etc/passwd.

this could be the reason that u r not able to log in b'cas u might have selected some other authentication system. when u install the system in d last it ask for what type of authentication u would like to do....... choose local /etc/passwd there...
may be this would solve ur problem.

From the command line it is yast2 to start it. Are you sure you are in single user mode??

    #the command is
    yast
#yast2 is the graphical tool. u need to run yast on the console, it is based on ncurses.
also kindly post what was the authentication that u chose while installation was finalizing.
