What's Wrong With YaST2 Software Manager?

I don't get what's so bad about openSUSE 10.2's yast2 package manager? people say it's slow, painful, annoying and every other bad adjective.

I find it easy to use.

So what's so bad about it? I don't see anything. Am I blind to something? That's just it, i don't see anything bad about it.

Can someone tell me what's bad about it?

I guess it's since some troubles it had when it switched the backend to zypp/rug. A lot of people found it very slow (including myself) and it even broke the update system. That was all fixed with a few patches later on. It works, it does the job. But generally speaking apt and smart are a lot faster and also have the option of using the command line as opposed to just the ncurses version.

    I agree

Yeah i do think it is a BIT slow. Maybe because I have a LOT of patience. I've never used APT. Well once when I first used Ubuntu. But i didn't like Ubuntu. I heard 10.3 will be a much faster distro with a faster boot times, app performance, and package manager. I've seen how fast the boot times are. Really fast! but the package manager wasn't very good in the beta version. Hope the will fix it up!

I just found out by "Distribution:" says suse 10.1. How embarrassing!

In 10.1 the software module in YAST was really terrible. Many users switched to SMART because of the package management problems using YAST. It seems like in 10.3, the backend that caused the problems is going to be dropped in favour of the old packaging tools.

I think the real problem was the transition. Although YaST was never lightning fast it was fine before the switch. I look forward to openSUSE 10.3 though. I run openSUSE 10.2 on my desktop/server and it's great. It has been a bit slow to boot, particularly when checking my ReiserFS formatted LVM. It stops for about 20 seconds on that. Altogether it takes about 90 seconds to boot, whereas my laptop takes about 25-30 to the desktop.
