No NIS server found
Hello everyone,
I have recently installed Linux Suse 10.1 on my computer.
However, it doesn't let me log in. The screen seems to freeze whenever I type my password and press enter.
Using Ctrl+Alt+F1, I can see what is going on.
I keep getting the same message all the time.
No NIS server found.
Can somebody please help me?
Thank you very much!!!!

It seems you told it to look for your password on a NIS sever rather than the local box. Can you log on as root?

Hi gogalthorp,
Thank you for your reply.
No, I can't login as root. Whenever I type su and press enter, it does nothing.
It stays like that for a while and then it says: login time out after 60 seconds.
Also I noticed that before it gives me the error: No NIS server found I get the following error as well.
Try to get initial date and time via NTP from 0.europe.pool.ntp.org
Starting ypbind......Error: Temporary failure in name resolution.
Any suggestions?

Easiest is to reinstall.Be careful what you check when entering your user info.
If you want to chase down the problem. Try booting from the CD/DVD select single user mode. See if you can get in there. THen type Yast and fix the user and root accounts. Good luck

Its working now but...
Hi gogalthorp,
I have reinstall Linux and it works now. Thank you for your advice.
When the system rebooted it prompted me to choose one of the following:
1) Linux
2) Linux (/dev/sda6)
3) Linux (/dev/sda7)
4) Windows (I forgot to tell you that the machine came with vista on it)
Can you please tell me, why there are 3 options of Linux?
Is it because I installed Linux three times?
How can I get rid of options 2 and 3?
Also, during the installation, I was asked to type the hostname and domain name.
I skipped this step and now I don't have internet although I am connected.
Can you please tell me what should I type in these text boxes?
Is it too late to enter these information now or I need to reinstall Linux?
Thank you gogalthorp, I really appreciatted.

Gogalthorp
I now have internet. I just assigned a static ip address and a subnet and it worked.
However can you please help me with the extra linux options I get when the machine is rebooted?
Thank you once again!!!!!!

Most probably you did not tell the installer to reuse the older Linux partitions. So it created new ones.
in a console
As root (ie type: su press enter then the root password note the root password will not echo to the screen)
type
fdisk -l
This will list the current partitions. Post them here and I or some one ought to be able to sort things out.
BTW normally Suse creates 3 partitions.
1)swap
2)root or "/" where most programs live
3)Home where your personal files are
These should not show up in the boot prompt however. So it looks like you created 3 root partitions at least.

Hi, goude

You've got another thread open about the partitioning subject so I'm closing this one. It's too confusing to those that try to help you when the same topic is in multiple locations.
Please continue your discussion in the other thread.
