I believe you must be root to run updatedb
type su then the root password
What sound card or chip?
Have you checked the volume control?
In Yast did you run the advanced button on the sound card setup screen and test the sound there?
try as root to run alsaconf see if that does not correct that problem it also plays a sound bite.

That sounds like a pathing problem or some things simply did not install.
I assume that the alsaconf command also failed to be found also.
How much disk space did you allocate to the install?
Also what is the sound chip or card?

Some distros don't install locate (and hence updatedb) by default. On SUSE, you need to install findutils-locate.

This may or may not help
