how can i go about in solving this issue?
what causes such symptoms in general?

One thing you can do is to launch the program from the console, which should report some messages and give you some idea of what's wrong.
Open a console window and type "vlc" and post any error messages you get here. I don't know that I'll be able to help, but it's a step closer to finding out what's wrong.
The times that it's happened to me, it's usually caused by missing libraries, or other files.
Installing via YaST should either resolve the dependencies automatically, or at least let you know of any problems. If this didn't happen in your case, then you could try a fresh install after removing it with YaST. There is a huge list of "requires" for VLC Player, as can be seen here.

If you're using YaST, it would be worth setting up some more repositories if you haven't already.
According to my installation, libdc1394 is available from the DVD (or extra CDs if you're using CDs), which means you should be able to install through YaST. It provides the exact file that you need.
