    Nvidia graphics problem

I'm sorta new to Linux, but I have managed to get the driver for my Nvidia Geforce Go 7300 installed and the xGL effects look sick as hell, but when I restarted my system I was unable to get into the x server setting.

Error: does not seem to be running the nvidia x driver.

I attempted to do run 'nvidia-xconfig' and restart the x server like it saids to, but that doesn't seem to work. I'm not sure how to restart the x server other than just swithing run levels, so I guess that could be the issue.

If anyone has an idea of what I might be doing wrong or possible fix's it would be great to hear them.

I have a Dell e1505 if you need to know.

How did you install? Did you use the Yast method? The problem may be that the newest NVIDIA driver does not support the GO chipsets

You must download the driver recommended for your chipset from NVIDIA site and install via the installer (instructions on the site) use what is called the hard method (really not that hard). You will need to be sure to install the kernel-source, gcc, and make before you do this.

To get back to your GUI log on as root then

    sax2 -r -m 0=vesa (0 is a digit, not a letter!)

    When completed type

    init 5

    to restart the GUI

    ????

I did you YAST to do the install and I was able to get into the nvidia x server configuration at first, but after my first reboot it has not worked ever since.

Yes because you have the wrong driver. Yast only installs the latest driver, but the latest driver does not support GO You must go to the NVIDIA site and get the driver for your chip set!!!!! Do not use YAST method with a GO chip set, you must use the other method!!!!!

To get back to your GUI log on as root then

    sax2 -r -m 0=vesa (0 is a digit, not a letter!)

    When completed type

    init 5

This takes you back to the default vesa driver

The nvidia site does not show a driver for the 7300 geforce go series. Only the 7800/7900 go series and Dell does not have a driver for Linux on there support site. Am I screwed?

I think this would be the one you are looking for

    Linux Display Driver - x86

edit: Unless you are using the 64 bit environment:
    Linux x64 (AMD64/EM64T)

    Best,
    /Ove

Also, the GO chip is a mobility chip and it is not directly supported by Nvidia. You can always get a 3rd party driver for it but Nvidia has been slack on their GO series.

That is the latest driver and does not work with GO

Use the one pointed to by either 7800 or the 7900 (they are the same driver and should work with the 7300, maybe )
It is the previous NVIDIA driver not the latest!!! Be sure you select the 64/32 bit version based on which bit version of Linux you installed. Also use what is called installing the hard way (it really is not that hard). But you must install the kernel-source and the gcc compiler before it will work, which is something you should do anyway.

If you click on the "Supported Products List" link that is on that drivers web site, the GeForce Go 7300 is listed.
