    Problems With Beryl

After re-installing suse (which I had already advised myself not to do...) I haven't been able to get beryl to work. Initially I installed beryl and it worked, but then after I rebooted I got a white screen everytime I logged in. I've tried unistalling and reinstalling as well as some command editing (like what it says to do in the openSuse wiki) and I've eventually ended up in a situation where compiz boots up fine (version 5.4 or something) but once I install beryl KDE crashes on login. I've also tried using yast from the command line, which didnt make any difference, as well as trying to install and enable via opensuse-xgl-settings which again didnt help.
how do I get beryl working? Or should I just stick with compiz?

yes. although I think the problem may be with XGL or Compiz, as the machine is still locking up with compiz, and installing compiz-fusion causes a similar problem
