Default user not connecting to X server, internet filter question
Hi there. I'm a new Linux user, and a friend gave me Suse 10.2 so that's what I've got installed. Last week one of my brothers was helping me (over IM--he uses Linux, but not Suse) install some drivers for my onboard sound (which still doesn't work). The computer froze, and I, used to Windows, hit the reset button. It booted into a command line/terminal interface. I can log into my default user through that, then I log into root, and type "kdm". (that's what my other brother told me to do...he uses Linux also but not Suse.) I can then log into any user BUT my default user. It flashes the terminal/command line, goes to a black screen with a loading cursor, then back to the login screen.
Also, I haven't gotten my onboard sound working yet, and that's also frustrating. My brothers suggested I try Ubuntu, but I haven't gotten around to it.
Lastly, I'm looking for an internet filter. I don't need logging or anything, just filtering, but if it comes with logging that's fine. Any ideas? I found one that looked good, DansGuardian.org, but evidently it only works with Suse 9, not 10.2.
Help, anybody?
