No Direct Rendering

Hello all I am new to Linux and to SUsE I have set up my Nvidia drivers by downloading them from the Nvidia website and following their guide I installed them however i have noticed that my screensaver is sluggish and so are a few other things after doing some research and consulting with another person on this forum I have found that my Direct Rendering is not working still unable to get it working I was hoping to get some help from others in the forum. Here is my xorg.conf

What Card or chip set?? If you have a GO chip set you may want to be sure you download the correct driver the Newest Driver does not support the GO chip set.!!!!

Did you install the kernel-source and the gcc compiler?? Did you use the Yast method or the hand install method?

Another thought. It is possible that you have a run away process running that is eating CPU cycles. At a Konsole prompt type

top

this will show the the processes that are running. Are there any using a large percentage of the CPU???

Also run glxgears. This will show a graphic and show the frames per second. On my 6800 based card I get 10,000+ fps at the graphic default size.

Commands

It is not a GO it's a Geforce 6800 GT PCI Express. Running top reveled a 10% CPU usage and here is glxgears output

chris@galactica:~> glxgears
34923 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6984.480 FPS
35056 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7010.769 FPS
35048 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7009.435 FPS
35283 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7056.527 FPS
35319 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7063.739 FPS
chris@galactica:~>

Thanks for taking the time to respond I really appreciate all your help.

Thats not bad timings looks like the driver is running. What CPU are you using? How much memory? 32 bit or 64 bit OS??

When running TOP the process that are using memory move to the top. This changes over time.

Specs

Athlon 64 3500 Claw Hammer Core
2 Gigabytes Guile PC 400 DDR Memory
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Mainboard
ASUS Geforce 6800 GT
Creative Audigy ZS 2 Gamer Sound Card
Pinnacle PCTV Pro Capture Card
ASUS 18X DVDRW
ASUS 52X CDRW
Sony Floppy Drive

Here are my specs yeah my screensaver is running alot smoother now but direct rendering stiill says it's not running if i do glxinfo? Maybe I don't need it as bad as I think I do?

Thanks for all you help.

Since I have a slightly slower CPU AMD64 3200++ running 2GHZ and also have a 6800 based Graphics card (GF 6800 Extreme 256MEg) I'm a bit surprised that your numbers are as low as they are

mine are
gogalthorp@linux1:~> glxgears
55443 frames in 5.0 seconds = 11088.549 FPS
56439 frames in 5.0 seconds = 11287.629 FPS
56344 frames in 5.0 seconds = 11268.796 FPS

But that does not explain your graphics slow down. You said that TOP showed 10% usages but normally mine shows 0% with occasional little blips that might reach 10% or higher. Which process is consuming 10%???? Is this a constant?

BTW I'm running 10.1 64bit and yes 32bit drivers are a pain

top

gnome-terminal seems to take up most of the CPU fluxing between 8 and 10 % everything else is like 0.3 and 0.5 % so it seems the terminal is the culprit taking it to 10% occasionally. It does not stay there mostly at 8% but i was just quoting the highest number seen. I still think that it has to do with direct rendering which I understand is very important to games and 3D applications like Blender which I am running. It would seem there is something I am missing to get this acceleration working correctly.

Thanks for all your help!
