    Suse 10.3 Multimedia dependencies - mpeg2enc

    HI

This question is probably jumping the gun since 10.3 hasn't officially been announced till tommorrow, but maybe this is something that is common in Suse ( I last used 9.3 ) . There are still several dependencies that cannot be resolved for packages. Of main interest to me was The program "Tovid" which installs but has 2 missing dependencies "mpeg2enc" and "mp2enc" , that aren't available so i thought that "encode2mpeg" may have been a suitable replacement however this cannot be installed either. I have enabled all community repositories except for debug and server, wlan repositories so I have packman kde gnome etc all enabled. I remember in 9.3 I had to hand add the repo's but this time they are all just in there.

Is there anything in 10.3 they I would have to add myself to get these resolved, or perhaps I should be patient and wait and is it likely that they would naturally resolve after official announcement ?

You might try Smart it gives much better info and control over installs. Note I have not tried 10.3 yet also I don't know if there is a a smart for 10.3 yet either.

Since it is just being released I expect that not all the repositories have been full fleshed out yet.

BTW how do you like 10.3 in general??

Well I used the 1Cd-Kde install and that went really we saved me a lot of time over downloading the DVD image. Well its very stable, thats why I chose it ( that was my experience with 9.3 as well).

The responsiveness of apps to load is fairly good and boot time is very quick. I did have a little fun getting NVIDIA to work I was using this howto NVIDIA - openSUSE for 10.2. Didn't fully work straight away it kept saying card not supported for 3D (Gtorce 6200). I can get 1600x1200 thru Nvidia settings controls but only 1280x1024 thru sax2. I had to issue
    Code:
    sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia
to get it all configured, I have got 3D but had to settle with 1280x1024.

    All in all very happy.

There are still a couple of unresolved dependencies. Gstreamer has a little trouble too - I've had to force an install and unfortunately the new updater system has dreadful resolution management as of RC1. I'm looking forward to the final release tomorrow. You will also notice that other 3rd party repos aren't 100% yet like Madwifi and some Packman stuff.

I had originally installed the 64-bit release and had lots of trouble so I installed the 32 bit thinking it was an architecture thing. Same troubles again but I got around most of them. I've also found that applications were launching really quickly before I installed the nvidia driver but are now quite slow.

Flebber, from what I could see the Nvidia repos didn't have drivers built for the new 10.3 kernels so that may explain your trouble?

You should find that KRandRtray will allow you to reset your resolution. It's a bit awkward as I haven't been able to automate it but you can set it manually. xrandr doesn't give enough res choices.

You want KRandRTray from the menu - Applications ->System ->Desktop Applet ->KRandRTray.
You'll get an icon in the system tray and if you click on it a menu of screen resolutions drop down. Choose the one you want.
You can try xrandr from a console but the choices aren't as wide. Type "man xrandr" in a console screen for the options.

    Missing Tovid Dependancy SUSE 10.3

    Hi flebber,

Did you ever get the issue with tovid and the missing mp2enc and mpeg2enc sorted out?

I'm running into the same thing with the released version of SUSE 10.3 x64.

When I run a search for either of these in yast's software management module with "RPM Provides" checked off I just get ffmpeg and transcode returned (which are already installed).

    Thanks in advance.
