Open SuSE 10.2
i'm not a total noob but i am no expert either. So i am pretty comfortable on the command line and not scared to try things but you know what they say about a little knowledge.....being a dangerous thing.
On to the questions.....
1. Can any one point me to a good security primer for Linux in general or my distro, Open SuSE 10.2 in paticular?
2. I know that spyware and viruses are not really a major issue at the moment however( yes i am sure you can tell i switched from windows last year, BTW i have no regrets and am reasonably certain i am more secure anyway) I am looking for a good source of information on the subject as it relates to linux in general and Open SuSE in paticular. Can any one point me in the right direction?
3. Rootkits? i am not in the habit of downloading odd programs from where ever i can but i have added some of the unofficial repositories from the wiki. Under what conditions can someone add software to these repositories? is there any review process? any details relating to this subject would be especially appreciated.
Basically i am looking for a decent if not absolutely F***ing fantastic guide to locking down my machine. What services run on a default install?which can i turn off and what are the consequences? I know some of the answers from my own trial and error but if there is a guide then i wouldn't mind taking a peek to confirm my own conclusions, dispell my delusions, and just generally tighten up the config.
Also what in the general opinion of this audience is the best primer on iptables? is it better than the deafault firewall?
Also my girlfriend has an ipod and i have gotten it to work but the songs she downloaded from iTunes are in some proprietary format, how do i get them to play or can i not?
I know this is quite a long post. I appreciate any info passed my way and am equally happy to help out anyone in need so fire away, if i don't know the answer....i'll say so....also do my best to point you in the right direction.....ok ok i will shut up now.
Thanks

If you haven't already looked at it, here's a short guide to security you can check out:

I'm not a high risk for security concerns so I spend very little time worrying over it. Maybe some of the others here can provide more specific answers to your questions.
Have fun with Linux!
