new openSUSE install, devices help needed
I just installed openSUSE 10.3 on my ASUS M3000N laptop. The wireless did not work out of the box, but I've used linux before so it's no surprise. The problem is my sound isn't working, and I don't know if it's not detecting the hardware, or if it doesn't have the right drivers. What do I need to do to get the sound and wireless working?

I have never used wireless so I'm not sure what's up there, but here's a HowTo that might help:

On the sound issue, it's usually muted by default when you first boot, so check your mixer settings.oz

well, i've already checked the sound, and it says there's either a problem with gstreamer, or the device is not recognized. I don't know how to check whether or not the computer actually sees the device, so I can't really do anything about it yet. As for the wireless, it recognizes the card and stuff, I just don't know how to access a network manager of some sort.

Open the konsole and type knetworkmanager. If your wireless is detected and working you can select the router you want to connect. Just to be sure type "iwconfig" and "iwlist eth1 scan" where eth1 enter the name of your wireless interface. Post the output here

okay, ill check out the wireless when i get a chance. right now my router's broken, and im not by public wireless. Is there a GUI manager for wireless, that can detect and display available networks? because I'm at college, and we use the public access wireless around campus, which is different depending on where you are. Also, any help with the sound? I have no idea what to do for it.

Have you tried as root to run alsaconf ??
Have you run the Sound setup in Yast?

okay, so i didn't know what yast was before, but it turns out to be real helpful. Anyway, the sound card is being recognized as "sound card number 0" and the driver is "snd-intel8x0". Whenever I try to change the sound volume or anything like that though it says either the sound card is not being seen (which I now know that it is) or it doesn't have the right gstreamer plugins. How would i get the right gstreamer plugins?

did you run alsaconf ???
In yast did you go to the advanced option and test the sound card and adjust levels??
To play MP3 and video etc you will still need to get drivers from guru and packman repositories. I assume they have set up 10.3 directories and packages. Because 10.3 is still new all package may not have been tested. Since the update/intall software has changed in 10.3 I'm not sure how do tell you to do that. I'm still on 10.1. You do want to setup your update function because I'm sure there will be maany fixes comming down the pipe/
here is a list just remember that you might need to adjust the URLs for 10.3

okay, so i ran alsaconf, and it didn't do me any good. it said everything should be up and running, but it's not. when i click on the volume icon on the lower right, it gives me the message that my card's not being recognized properly, or i have the wrong gstreamer plugins. Is it anything to do with gstreamer plugins?

Sorry don't have a clue on this. There are a lot of new things in 10.3
You might see if there are any updates.
