    Question ATI in suse 10.3

Is there something wrong with the ATI drivers for OpenSUSE 10.3?
I get this error when I try to run glxinfo and glxgears with the ATI drivers:
    Code:
    ZGreenMachine:~ # glxinfo
    name of display: :0.0
    Segmentation fault
    ZGreenMachine:~ # glxgears
    Segmentation fault
    ZGreenMachine:~ # glxgears
    Segmentation fault
And this is what I get with the Mesa drivers
    Code:
    ZGreenMachine:~ # glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: DRI R300 Project
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R300 20060815 AGP 8x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE TCL
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 7.0.1
    OpenGL extensions:
    ZGreenMachine:~ # glxgears
    7419 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1483.699 FPS
    7704 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1540.642 FPS
    8012 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1602.393 FPS
    8330 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1665.987 FPS
    7413 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1482.543 FPS
    8103 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1620.538 FPS
    What is going on?

You might check to see if you have the correct drivers for your card. Try downloading and installing from ATI rather then using the repository.

Be sure that you get the 64bit version if you are running 64bit Suse and 32 if running 32.

    Something is definitely wrong.

I think I found the problem... on the ATI site the latest driver is 8.40.4 and the repo has it as 8.41.7... is suse using a beta? and is it ok to use the 10.2 ati repo for 10.3?

ok, when i did the manual install with the ATI drivers, I get this weird issue where my mouse pointer is out of whack (like my visual mouse pointer is 5 inches below an Invisible pointer) an I had to uninstall the ATI drivers VIA console.
So I found the kernel update, so I'm going to try that kernel with the YAST2 install and see what happens

    Same Issue seen here

    Hi

I also have seen exactly the same, but not yet gone into the issue in depth.
I started on OpenSUSE 10.2 and upgraded from the August release to the October release of the ATI driver on my Shuttle SB62G2 with an 9600 card.

result - seg faults as you describe. plus some screen coirruption at the lower right corner

I wrote this off to "too much messing around on this installation" and as I had intended to upgrade anyway to 10.3.

After upgrading to 10.3 and applying the latest October release via one click install, I faced exactly the issue you described - mouse is shifted vertically down about half a screen from the actual pointer. Also when I pulled the mouse to the bottom edge I experienced a vertical bar of corrupted display about an inch wide extending up the screen. Which disappears when you move the mouse pointer back up. I had so little control I had to reset the machine to get back in..

(sorry I don't have the driver numbers here in front of me...but my guess is August was 8.41 and the latest October release was 8.43)

In safe mode (init 3) I copied the Xorg.conf to a backup file and replaced the original to get back control.

I haven't yet had a chance to do any fault finding except a little googling and your post is the only one describing the mouse issue that I've found.

I will next try the August drivers and if they're OK, begin a fault find at software level. If the August (8.41?) driver flakes out, I'm gonna assume opensuse 10.3 has an issue...as it worked fine under opensuse 10.2

If I get any further results or data I'll post here.

    Cheers.

    One option...

    Whilst browsing here

    AMD/ATi 8.42 Driver for Linux (Compiz-Fusion support) - DriverHeaven.net

    I found this suggestion:

"If you are getting artifacts (hatch marks) in the lower right corner of the display and perhaps on the mouse pointer, the following seems to stop that:

"In the fglrx device section, add: Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps" . I found that on the wiki for a different problem, but it seems to work for this as well."

I will check this next, although I don't yet see why it should work....

If you go the the opensuse site under the ATI drivers section, I found out that the 8.41 drivers are for HD cards only. The just resantly upgraded them to a more compatible driver 8.42.3.

    ATI - openSUSE

    if you want more info.

    HI

OK - I was out of step with my driver version numbersin my earlier reply -happens when you're posting in meetings when you should be paying attention :-p

Under 8.42.3 I had to kill mouse artifacts and corruption on the bottom right of the screen by introducing
    Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps"
into my xorg.conf as described above

The best way to configure was to be in init 3 and then run sax2.
Even then my PC exits sax2 config to a black screen....by waiting and later hit ting ctrl-alt-del I was able to get a clean shutdown. Xorg.conf did get re-written and the drivers did get taken into use. I didn't find any fixes to this.

The usual test (gears etc) worked except for:

    > fgl_glxgears
    Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
X Error of failed request: GLXUnsupportedPrivateRequest
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 16 (X_GLXVendorPrivate)
Serial number of failed request: 41
Current serial number in output stream: 42

For this I also found no hints or clues, but chose to ignore it as everything else seems fine.

In the meantime Linux Proprietary Driver - Catalyst 7-11 Release: x86 and x86_64 variants is out...and the game begins again...but not this weekend!

    All the best.

    Hi gryff,

Have you tried the 7.11 release (8.43.3) already? In case you want to give it a go, here are some of my experiences. Although this driver generally works fine for me, I was still getting the GLXUnsupportedPrivateRequest error you mention with fgl_glxgears.
I found that the program loads the mesa-version of libGL.so which installs into /usr/lib64.
    Entering
    LD_PRELOAD=/usr/X11R6/lib64/libGL.so.1; fgl_glxgears
forces it to load the Ati-opengl-libs that come with the Ati-driver. It's working fine now.

    Hope that helps.
