ATI @ Suse 10.3
I tried to install the latest ATI drivers for my ATI Radeon 200M graphics card by following the following website:
http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=..._Video_Drivers
However, after entering sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx I had only a black screen. What might the problem be?
I have installed Suse10.3 Final 64bit.
Note: I DID d/l the 64bit ATI drivers.Ubuntu 8.04 [32bit] @ Gateway MX6453 Notebook

on suse 10.3 there are community repositories for different drivers. u don't need to download all the drivers manually, just click on it & it will install.
another suggestion download sabayon linux live cd. it has everything on the live cd. check whether u r able to get the display for ur graphics card & which driver is being used.
type as root on the konsole : lshal

Best thing to do is open YaST, launch the Community Repositories module and enable the ATI repository. Install the driver and kernel module in Software management ( Ithink it's fglrx or ati, I don't use ATI). It's a simple restart of X or reboot from there.

I did that; the driver got installed normally; i rebooted and then i had the following issues:
(1) After typing "glxinfo" or "glxgears" I was getting the following:
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
Segmentation fault
(2) **CRITICAL** After "init 3" and entering the command "sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx" I got a frozen screen. The screen looked as it was getting melted or something -- that is how i can best describe what i was seeing on the screen -- it was not the usual test screen which is supposed to pop up after the previous command.
(3) After pressing on "My Computer" I could not see anything; I was getting the msg that the sysinfo protocol died unexpectedly. [After uninstalling the fglrx driver, that msg went away]
Help guys. Thanks.Ubuntu 8.04 [32bit] @ Gateway MX6453 Notebook

ok now another problem :@
I tried to follow the instructions for manual installation of the ATI drivers from the Suse Wiki, but at the point where it says "cd /usr/src/linux" there is no such a path! I have installed the kernel sources through Yast. What the **** is wrong?
For your convenience here is the relative link:

I'll have to default to someone else on this one, I don't have a lot of experience troubleshooting ATI drivers.

Gatekeeper... you keep referring to an out-of-date susewiki article. As it says, tested versions: 10.0, 10.1... so it doesn't surprise me that it is telling you to go to paths that may not be there, etc. Plus it doesn't take advantage of any of the advances that were brought by 10.2 or 10.3. Specifically, with 10.3, the one-click installs (which I have come to love, as I have found that when installing the components manually myself it doesn't always work, but if I click that button it almost always does, with the exception, of course, of the Compiz stuff [As indicated by my other post]).
Here:
ATI - openSUSE
I had problems when I added the repository and installed the drivers manually too, but click that "one click install" link, and it pretty much just works. If anything, afterward, open a terminal and type sax2 -r.
Good luck!
