    NVIDIA 8600GS Support

I have tried installing ubuntu with no success on my hp dv9500t laptop. The problem was with X not starting in turn because of my video card. I am looking to try SUSE but I know that it doesn't support that card either. Does anyone have any suggestions for at least getting through the install with x window so that i might find drivers for the card?

    installing nvidia drivers

the issue was that the system would not even boot to a kernel after install. It would just sit at a black screen indefinitely. I was able to enter safe graphics mode and at least get to a BusyBox prompt ... from there i loaded the generic video driver by command "modprobe piix" and then was able to exit to gnome. once i compiled the video drivers and edited the entry in xorg.conf, the system would no longer boot at all. thus, i abandoned ubuntu because of my own incompetence and the number of problems people have reported with other hardware and was planning to install suse. is there anyhope for my ubuntu configuration? or for suse?

It's unfortunate that you are suffering with this (relatively) new card. In the meantime I would just try a couple of distros until you come across one that works. I run an 8600GT OC on my desktop without any trouble. Did you try disabling ACPI / APIC to get the system up and running?
