yup! That's my question! Every program I download I just get the source codes or programming text... whatever it's called.
Thanks!...

Welcome to the forums!

Here's a HowTo that covers installing packages from source (post #2):

You'd probably find it easier to use YAST for installing your software packages.oz

thanks. I'm trying to install Pidgin 2.2.1 on SUSE 9.1
Unless age is the problem, I'm getting this message when I config:
The msgfmt command is required to build libpurple. If it is installed on your system, ensure that it is in your path. If it is not, install GNU gettext to continue.
And I'm finding a bunch of different GNU files.
Thanks

I'd say you'll have more trouble than it's worth installing 9.1. There have been major changes since and there are (to my knowledge) no 9.1 repositories still active. You will most likely need to build everything from source which will leave you in a predicament with some of the dependencies you'll come up against.
If it is possible/feasible you might want to look at a newer release. In the meantime though I think gaim and kopete were available on the 9.1 install discs.
