SUSE 10.3 frozen desktop
after installing compiz on my laptop i shut down my computer. when i rebooted the entire desktop is frozen. i can move the mouse around but cant click on any icons, nothing happens. so i click a few buttons like fire fox and konqueror and nothing. i hit ctrl alt del and get the shutdown menu and all of a sudden firefox and konqueror pop up. so i hit cancel on the shutdown menu and try to close firefox and konqueror and the screen is still frozen. ive rebooted several times and the same thing. I had everything running great up until this point. i dont need the 3d stuff that bad, at this point i just want to get things running again.
anyone have any ideas

Uninstall compiz
press ctrl-alt-F1
log on as root
stop the GUI type
init 3
Start yast type
yast2
remove compiz
restart the GUI type
init 5
That should work

i just tried your suggestion. i can open the start menu and applications, but now all of the icons down in the menu bar (cant think of the name of it) by the clock in the bottom right are missing. like knetwok manager and the battery icon dont show up. also when i open a browser or any window i cant close or minimize them. the top bar where these controls are is just missing. i fear i may have removed something i shouldnt have. i removed compiz and a list of compiz related apps came up saying dependencies were missing . i thought they were just related to compiz so i removed them all. think maybe i should just reinstall? dont really have anything to lose. just been messing around with linux trying to learn.

If you are just playing by all means reinstall.
Note be carefully when you do if you don't tell the installer to reuse the older Linux partitions it tends to want to create new ones. Note also that if you tell the installer to use but not reformat the home directory you can save any personal data. If you do this you do probably want to delete the .kde or .gnome directories which hold your desktop preferences since these are most likly messed up from your 3D experiment.
